FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why Is Red Light Therapy Called Different Names?
Short Answer: TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION
LASER ––► LED ––► Hyper Plasma-Arc/Quartz
Because early uses of PhotoBioModulation (PBM) exclusively employed lasers, It is sometimes incorrectly assumed that PhotoBioModulation means 'Laser Therapy'. It does not.
As PBM technology evolved, other light sources such as LED's have been used, and new, more efficient ways of employing PMB have broadened the range of treatment application. It's all PhotoBioModulation, but using different light sources and filtration technology.
What's In A Name?
Today, you'll find PhotoBioModulation referred to as Low Level Light Therapy • LED therapy • Laser Therapy • Red Light Therapy • LLLT (short for low level laser therapy).
In recent years there has been an effort to clarify naming conventions because they all are forms of PhotoBioModulation –– using “light” as the energy source. We use the designation PBM Red Light Therapy.
Our LightCare systems employ a proprietary Hyper Plasma-Arc/Quartz light source and a patented filter system.
Short Answer:
JEWELRY or CONTACT LENSES - NO
MAKEUP - NOT OPTIMAL
While makeup can be worn during treatment, optimally it is preferable to have clean skin with no makeup.
All Jewelry must be removed before treatment. Contact Lenses cannot be worn during treatment.
How Long Is Each Treatment Session?
Short Answer: 20 MINUTES
Each treatment session is 20 minutes long. Intimate treatments are limited to 10 minutes per session.
How Often Can I Have A Treatment?
Short Answer:
ONE PER DAY FOR EACH BODY PART TREATED
You are limited to one treatment session per day on each body area.
However during the same visit, you could have another treatment focused on a different body area.
How Many Treatments Are Recommended ?
Short Answer:
12 TREATMENTS
Recommended Course Of Treatment: 12 Sessions
While some patients feel noticeable results after just one 20 minute session, we recommend a course of treatment of 12 sessions. After results are optimized during this initial period, maintenance treatments once or twice monthly are recommended.
Can I Take More Than One Treatment Per Visit?
Short Answer: YES
⮕ DIFFERENT BODY PARTS
While Individual body areas are limited to 20 minutes per day, another 20 minutes session can focus on a different body area during the same visit.
What Research Supports PBM Red Light Therapy?
Short Answer:
PBM EXTENSIVELY RESEARCHED
Near Infrared Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation ) has been extensively researched since its discovery in 1965, as science continues to seek non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical alternatives for treatment of a wide range of common conditions.
Nobel Prize: In 1998, Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Frid Murad won a Nobel Prize for their discoveries concerning Nitric Oxide as a signalling molecule in the Cardiovascular system, establishing its function as a ‘relaxing’ agent that when released from our cells, assists in better blood flow ⮕ which means better circulation and lower blood pressure.
One major benefit of Red Light Therapy is that it stimulates release of Nitric Oxide into our bodies.
Over 3,600 papers have been published by universities and medical organizations supporting the efficacy and low risk factors associated with near Infra-red light.
Can I Remain Clothed During My Treatment?
Short Answer: Yes
Clothing is optional at the discretion of each patient. Optimal results are achieved with a minimum of barriers between the light source and the area under treatment. When clothing is worn: light colours are better than dark colours. Thin fabrics are better than bulky fabrics.
Are Makeup, Jewelry or Contact Lenses ok?
Short Answer:
JEWELRY or CONTACT LENSES - NO
MAKEUP - NOT OPTIMAL
While makeup can be worn during treatment, optimally it is preferable to have clean skin with no makeup.
All Jewelry must be removed before treatment. Contact Lenses cannot be worn during treatment.
What about Pacemakers or Silicone Implants?
Short Answer:
SILICONE IMPLANTS - OK
EPILEPSY or PREGNANCY - NO
PACEMAKERS - OK WITH SOME RESTRICTIONS
Patients with Silicone Implants are able to freely enjoy PBM Red Light treatment
Individuals who cannot be treated:
1) Those suffering from Epilepsy
2) Those with Pacemakers cannot receive treatment near their implant sites (for example: could take treatment on feet but not chest –– consult your doctor for clearance)
3) Those who are pregnant or trying to become so in the near future should not take treatment unless cleared by their doctor
Is PBM Red Light Therapy Government Licensed?
Short Answer:
YES. CLASSIFIED AS A CLASS 2 MEDICAL DEVICE
Class designations denote safety. A comparable example would a wheelchair, which is also a class 2 medical device.
Our LightCare Red Light Systems are registered with Health Canada and The FDA.
Are Any Unusual Safety Precautions Necessary?
Short Answer:
NO - JUST THE BASICS
No extraordinary safety measures are required during a PBM Red Light Treatment. PhotoBioModulation has a decades long track record of safety and efficacy.
Patients will be set up at 8" distance from the light source. Personal Eye Protection Googles are optional for most treatments (mandatory if having a facial area treatment). A fresh personal-use set is supplied for each patient. Hight Intensity light may cause damage to the eye and should never be looked at directly without Eye Protection.
Our eye protection googles are in conformance to FDA Regulation 21CFR.1040.20 and CSA, CE Health Canada requirements.
